Flex Seal is a liquid rubber coating that is an essential item for any outdoor or indoor DIY project. Unlike other rubber coatings available on the market, Flex Seal paint can be used on a wide variety of different materials. The key question is, can you paint Flex Seal?
Select Flex Seal products, such as Flex Seal Spray and Flex Seal Glue, can be successfully painted over. However, you will not be able to paint over certain products from Flex Seal, such as Flex Seal Tape and Flex Seal Liquid.
While this may be true, there are a few other ways that you can get the color you want. Read on as we dig a little deeper.
What is Flex Seal?
Flex Seal can be used on any crack, or leak in your home. Their variety of products allows you to avoid the costly process of calling out a professional repairman, but they are also great for creating a watertight seal wherever water ingress may be a problem.
Whether it’s to block water or fix a seal, Flex Seal can be your go-to solution!
The only issue is having a noticeable or out-of-place seal that doesn’t fit in with the rest of the space. This leads many people to wonder whether or not they can paint it.
Can I Change the Color of Flex Seal?
It depends on which Flex Seal product you are using. When the company came up with the idea of Flex Seal, they did not realize that it would become so popular. Currently, users themselves have come up with new ways to apply the Flex Seat coating.
If you are using the Flex Glue, or the Flex Seal Spray you can apply paint over them. On the other hand, if you are using Flex Shot or Flex Seal Liquid, you cannot apply paint over them.
Flex Glue: The Flex Glue is meant to be used as a strong adhesive. It can also be used as a sealer for doors and windows. You can paint over Flex Glue, and any commercially available paint will work.
Flex Seal Spray: Unlike Flex Glue, Flex Seal Spray comes in a can. After the spray coating has dried down, you can apply any polyurethane paint.
Now that we know which Flex Seal products can be painted over, let us take a look at which products cannot be painted over!
Flex Tape: You cannot apply paint over Flex Tape. However, there is a workaround. If you have no other option but to paint over the Flex Tape, take some Flex Glue, apply it over the area you want to paint, and then add the paint.
This process should work without any discoloration issues. The tape does come in a few colors but the range is limited to white, black, clear, and gray.
Flex Seal Liquid: You can only apply Flex Spray Liquid over an already existing layer of Flex Seal Liquid. You can add as many layers of coating as you like. However, do not apply the next layer of liquid before the previous layer has dried completely.
Also, do not make the mistake of mixing Flex Seal Liquid with any other liquid sealant. This is because the Flex Seal Liquid comes with its own unique formula. If you mix it with another liquid, its integrity will be damaged, affecting its overall performance.
Flex Shot: Flex Shot cannot be painted over. However, you might not need to apply color on a layer of Flex Shot. This product is available in four different colors of white, almond, clear, and black, so pick the one that best suits your purpose.
Best Practices for Using Flex Seal
When painting over the Flex Seal coating, always make sure you are doing so in a well-ventilated and dry environment. Proper air circulation is also necessary for the best performance.
If there are no windows in your space, you can use the spray in a room with fans running behind you.
If you want to do the project outdoors, make sure you are doing it on a clear day, and ideally one with low humidity.
Also before painting, make sure the surface of the Flex Seal coating is completely dry and has no dust on it.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What Paint Will Stick To Flex Seal?

What Colors Are Available for Flex Seal?
Most Flex Seal products are only available in a limited number of colors. For example, its classic liquid rubber is only available in black, white, and clear. They do, however, have a color spray range that gives people a lot more options. There are 12 different colors available, so there is a good chance they have exactly what you need.
How Long Before You Can Paint Flex Seal?
The exact time will depend on several different factors such as the environment and how thick the layer you used was. That being said, it will generally be fully dry in one or two days. It’s best to leave it for 48 hours to be confident that it has fully dried.
Final Thoughts On Painting Flex Seal

Can i throw cement dust out of its bag onto newly sprayed flex seal. (i am spraying a one inch wide run to seal between my brick siding where it meets the concrete patio slabs at ground level. ... so the blackness of the flex seal would be tempered by the dust which i am guessing might stick to it)
